The functions of JACRA embrace the setting of Quality Standards, provision of Quality Assurance and Certification Services and generally focus on governing the trading in the Spices industry in Jamaica.

  • Currently trading in agricultural commodities such as Pimento, Nutmeg, Ginger and Tumeric
  • Pimento accounts for 90% of the Divisions Operations. Nutmeg 5%, Ginger 4% and Tumeric 1%
  • Pimento is the major export commodity

Spices

The major challenges and issues which negatively affect the Spices Industry are as follows:

  • Destruction of Pimento trees for the use of charcoal production for Jerk purposes
  • Price competition for Pimento from the major producers in Mexico
  • Ginger Rhizome Rot (GRR) disease
  • Harvesting of Tumeric due to the fact that this commodity is grown mostly in the wild
